Kiskendo Cave is not only beautiful but also has a mystery

Kiskendo cave is a natural cave located at Mount Menoreh 1200 meters above the sea level. The weather is very fesh. This cve is 35 km north west of Yogyakarta on the top of north mount Kulonprogo Regency. The access to Kiskendo cave is very easy and the road is good. You can go there by motorcycle or by family car. For the tourists who wants go there by bus, you must stop at Niten Village near the Giri Mulyo District Office. It is almost 8 km from the cave.

Not far from the Kiskendo Cave, there is Sumitro Cave. Sumitro Cave has two mouths cave. There are vertical and horizontal. The horizontal there is a beautiful river. This tourist attraction is very suitable for camping activity because the location is very wide and the the air is very fresh. Kiskendo Cave that located on Jatimulyo village, Girimulya can be reached from Yogyakarta approximately 38 km or less then 21 km from Wates Yogyakarta. Along Kiskendo cave, you can enjoy the scenery of the incredible mountain. Entering Kiskendo cave, the tourists will greet with the beauty of stalactite and stalagmites.  Based on the legend, the cave was the palace belonging two giants named Maeosuro and Lembusuro. Both of them was defeated by Subali can be seen on the relief in the front of the cave.

The History of Kiskendo Cave
This tourist attraction is located 35 kilometers on the west of Ygyakarta, at Mount Menoreh. This cave consists of Kiskendo cave, Sumitro cave and Watu Blencong. All of them are natural cave at Mount Menoreh that is 1.200 above sea levels, the weather is fresh. Based on the shape and the condition there, it is simlar with said at the legend of Kiskendo cave palace (the story of Ramayana). It was a place where the giant name Mahesasura  whose head was buffalo and Lembusura whose head was cow lived.

In the shadow puppet’s story, in this place the battle of Subali and Sugriwa against Mahesasura and Lembusura who lived at this cave.  Beside this, the geological conditions of cave that located at limestone region makes this cave has many beautiful stalactite and stalagmites but they also have strage shapes. In the cave, there was a river underground. The battle among them made the river to be red and white.

There are 15 rooms that each of them has own names and own interesting stories. For example, there is one room named Lidah Mahesosuro. At this room there is a stone that the shape is like a tongue. Reputedly, tongue at the stone is the Mahesosuro’s tongue that was cut by Subali so that he could not life again. The other example is the room named Lumbung Kampek, it was a place to save the treasure of Kiskendo Cave Palace.

Kiskendo cave is sacred cave. The reason is this place often uses to do ritual like imprisoned or it cause by the myth on the people. Near the Kiskendo cave, there is shadow puppet relief. The relief is also in Sumitro Cave and Watu Blendong.

Along the way to the cave, enjoy the beautiful scenery among the valley, green farmland, and simple traditional houses at the village. It is better for you to take photograph about them.
